comic making and art classes for tomorrow's storytellers

What is Conjuring Creativity?

Conjuring Creativity provides comic making, art and visual story telling courses and workshops for energetic young minds; that are focused on celebrating the innate creativity that everyone is born with. The classes are created and taught by Soolagna Majumdar.

Term courses are designed for students to have an in depth introduction to a variety of drawing, painting and story telling techniques; where through structured creative projects and activities, they are able to develop their foundational knowledge in these areas.

Workshops are designed as single session classes where young people create delightful pieces of art that further develop their understanding of shape and colour.

Where are Conjuring Creativity courses held?

The courses are currently being run in room 2/3 at the iconic Atwell House Community Centre found at 586 Canning Hwy, Alfred Cove WA 6154.

What to expect from a Conjuring Creativity lesson?

The goal of every lesson at Conjuring Creativity is for young people to feel confident in who they are, and their creative abilities. The structure and focus of these classes is centred on them and their creative journey. The learning experience should be a positive and affirming one, and Soolagna hopes that all courses provide that experience to the special, young mind in your life.

Along with developing confidence in creative and technical skills, these lessons aim to provide a welcoming and inclusive space that also encourages a collaborative learning environment. Growing up, Soolagna found a lot of “her people” in the creative spaces she hung out in, and she hopes Conjuring Creativity can offer that space in someone’s creative journey too.

Aside from a bottle of water and a nut free snack, all a student needs to bring to a Conjuring Creativity lesson is themselves. Art supplies, process folders and other items are provided. As students will be learning how to draw and make art using traditional mediums, and create pictures from their imagination – Ipads and phones are not needed. Given the nature of art classes, it’s best to wear comfortable clothing that students are ok with getting a bit of ink on 🙂

Why Comics?

Comics is a powerful medium with an incredible history that requires the creator to dip into multiple disciplines like the visual and performing arts, graphic design, literature, technical drawing and much more. Every comic made further develops and enhances the creator’s knowledge of these disciplines. Comics are also an accessible medium, with so much of the great works that define comics being made with the humble piece of paper, pencil and ink.

Most importantly, comics are very cool and are made by very very cool people.
